Claims, Craftsmanship and Cornish Roots? Welcome, Nick Woodward, to Consilium

We have just welcomed Nick Woodward to the Consilium team as our new Chief Claims Officer, bringing nearly three decades of experience across the legal and claims sectors.

Jun 25

Nick joins us from Optio, where he was Claims Director, and has built his career on technical precision and operational excellence. An ACII-qualified (re)insurance lawyer, Nick is recognised as a multi-class, multi-jurisdiction claims specialist with deep expertise across Lloyd’s, the London Market and MGA environments.

Though Nick’s credentials speak for themselves, he isn’t all spreadsheets and settlement clauses. His first job was a paper round, which he credits for his lifelong respect for punctuality (and an early wariness of dogs).

Outside of work, he is happiest with a hot chocolate or a good glass of red wine, and if he could master any skill instantly, it would be dry stone walling - a surprising choice, perhaps, but one that speaks to his hands-on approach and appreciation of craftsmanship.

While Nick is often mistaken for having Mediterranean roots, a recent dive into his ancestry revealed, in his words, “nothing more exotic than Cornwall.” A grounded guy with global experience - just the way we like it.

We caught up with Nick to learn more about what he does, how he does it and what he has learned from his career in claims (spoiler: always double-check who is copied into your emails).

Consilium: What does a Chief Claims Officer actually do?

Nick: I lead and mentor a team of claims experts who provide exceptional service to customers in their time of need. I use my technical knowledge to help customers achieve the best financial outcomes, and I build relationships with business partners to help win and retain profitable business.

C: What’s one claim you’ve never forgotten and why?

N: I once handled PI claims for a large, well-known loss adjusting company that sent two adjusters to investigate a break-in at the palatial home of an adult magazine publisher.

The loss adjusters emailed each other back and forth poking fun at some interesting things they found in the publisher’s bedroom. Unfortunately, they inadvertently copied the publisher into their emails, who read all their comments and promptly sued the company for breach of privacy and libel.

C: What’s the most unexpected thing you’ve ever learned from a claim?

N: Learn to accept the ‘unexpected’ because there will be lots of it, which is also one of the things that makes working in claims so interesting.

C: What’s the one thing people always get wrong about claims?

N: While most people have first-hand experience making routine home, motor or travel claims, that just scratches the surface. They are often unaware that London Market claims teams can be asked to handle everything from aircraft & satellite losses, to claims arising from failed M&A transactions, to property, construction, energy and emerging political risks across the world.

As Nick steps into his new role, he will lead our eight-strong claims advocacy team, working closely with Duncan Childs, Head of Technical Claims and Coverage, to push the boundaries of what great claims management looks like.

Nick told us,

It is rare to find a broker that is independent and puts clients and employees at the core of its mission. Combined with their rapid growth and industry recognition, it is a truly inspiring opportunity, and I’m eager to be part of it.

Nick Woodward

His appointment reflects our ongoing investment in building a world-class claims proposition - one that is fast, fair and fiercely client-focused. We are thrilled to have him on board.
